An air of history – Magical locations
Though the country's fierce history razed to the ground many castles and mansions, a huge number of sites that echo bygone ages still amaze visitors. The Fertőd Mansion for example, once the seat of the well-known aristocrat family Esterházy, has long lacked the splendour it had once enjoyed. Now the mirrors, gilding, chandeliers and parquet all sparkle. Visitors, either just looking around the mansion or enjoying a concert or a banquet feel as though they have stepped back in time and become residents of a fabulous palace.
The architect of the Museum of Ethnography intended it to be the Houses of Parliament. But proving too small, it became the right place to showcase Hungary's rich folklore. In addition to artefacts, permanent and temporary exhibitions, the museum serves as a venue for glamorous receptions.
Today, the Buda Castle houses museums. The courtyard of the baroque-style, expansive and domed building from Maria Theresa's time plays host to splendid celebrations and open-air receptions. A convivial atmosphere is provided for groups by artists, clowns, dancers, musicians and vendors.
The Legendary Puszta
The Magyars once roamed the steppes on horseback. Here, in the Carpathian Basin they also found large expanses of grassland where today descendants of former herders, shepherds, cowherds, and rangemen exhibit their equestrian skills for groups. Imagine five-horse carriages, stuntsmen on horseback brandishing whips. On a day on the Hungarian Great Plain you will enjoy Hungarian music and the spectacle of traditional dances, what more the environment, the tranquil atmosphere and kettle-cooked meals will perfectly evoke what life was like in the Hungarian Puszta.
Tips for groups
Those who have an eye for the finer things in life may visit wine cellars in the capital or the countryside. The cellars in in the northern moutains, the sunny wine regions in the south or along the shores of Lake Balaton have a special atmosphere.
The castle tournaments at Visegrád evoke the age of the great Hungarian king of the renaissance, Matthias. On the way back from the Danube bend region, a magical reception may be staged on a riverboat, to which the pearl of the blue Danube, the illuminated city of Budapest provides a great background.
Whoever desires to go horseback riding can find a romantic venue for it in Hungary. One may participate in a traditional vintage, be it at the famous Tokaj mountain sides or the Balaton highlands. Competing in a "Trabant rally" – with a unique Eastern European automobile – that is really a nostalgic oddity, one of the favourite programmes by summer or winter time. At the site of Formula 1 competitions even drag races are being organized for those who enjoy "cannonball runs". Or why not hiring a few tanks and organising an enourmous paintball competition for military fans…
Of the UNESCO world heritage sites, there are nine located in Hungary. These are the poetically beautiful village of Hollókő, the Buda Castle and Andrássy Street in the capital, the stalactite cave of Aggtelek, the Benedictine abbey of Pannonhalma, the Hortobágy National Park, the Early Christian Cemetery in Pécs, Lake Fertő Cultural Landscape, and last but not at least the Historic Wine Region of Tokaj. Do not hesitate to include these unequalled sceneries into the programmes to make them even more successful and memorable.
